Who really designs Santa's wrapping paper?

So who really designs Santa's wrapping paper. Well an Art Elf that's who.  I made this elf last year out of wire and model magic for the face.  Wrapped he green felt for clothing. He did have a hat but lost it on the way to the North Pole.

My students (the Kinders) really love it. My elf has been traveling around some of the regular ed classes.  Today he is up to not good. Painting on my cabinets today.

There is so much more to this story.

Mono-shoes

My first grader studied Andy Warhol.  I show them how he did his blobbed ink drawings and also how he made shoe drawing.  I hady students draw their own shoe and also had them draw a shoe they wanted to wear when they were an adult.  We drew the shoes with black crayons. Then we used plastic sheets over the crayon drawing and colored them with markers.  Put wet paper on top of that and rubbed.  To get the print.

Was really sure what to do with the background.

The project needs a little work.

The power of the coat.

So this is a funny story.  The new art teacher at my school got boxes or brand new lab coats.  And let me tell you they are very powerful.  So one of my Kinders class they call me Mr. Rohde.  But when I put the coat on I transform to Dr. Rohde. No training/schooling needed.

Many failures with great height

I did a sculpture project where all they could use is newspaper and tape.  I shows them how to roll the paper.  I told them that they could make any geometric form and that it had to be as talk as me.  5'8ish.   And that is all I told them. I let them go at it.  They worked in groups of 4 and they all started out rolling paper then the building started.   Many of the groups built cubes.  Which after sitting a week at all fell apart.  Some groups learned from that and some didn't.  It was really neat to watch them work on this.
I asked them it they liked doing this project.  I was scared that they didn't because of all the failure.  But must of them loved it.  One of my students thought art was just drawing and painting.  He had no clue you could build things and call it art.   I was very proud of all my student in that 5th grade class.  I will get a few more pictures in the next few day.

Art club first project

So this I am doing art club.  We had a great group of 4th and 5th graders that came together to work on this project.  We had groups of 4-5 students pregroup to make one sclputure.  Some of the student want to be wrapped up and some didn't.   We took cling wrap to wrap the students first. Then they took packing tape and wrapped the student in at least 4 layers of tape to make it strong.  After we got all the parts they put them all together to make one person. Then they add some fun stuff to them.

You know you want to do this.

Britto Animals

This was my 5th grade project.  We first talked about who Britto was and what type of art he made.

Then we made a background.  With all my 5th grades I changed it up every time I did the project.  To try and figure out which way would look the best. Ally were a crayon resist just different lines.

So I wanted to know what my student knew about the color wheel. So I gave them a little color wheel pretest.  To see what color groups we need to work on.  So we draw are Britto style animal and divided it up into alest 8 parts   One for each color groups we talks about. Then we colored them in using the color groups with oil pastels which all students love.  Outline with black and then glued onto the background.

First time doing this project. I think it was a great success.

Thanks for tuneing in to my messy art room.

Review for Classroom Friendly Supplies

Hey you all. I hope you all are enjoying your summer vacation.  So like I said in my previous post I am working on the order for next year.  As many of you it is hard to find one that does a great job.   So I googled “Worlds best pencil sharpener”  And this is what popped up www.classroomfriendlysupplies.com. So I clicked on the website and checked it out.  I contacted them, and they sent me one of their pencil sharpers to review.
So first of all it is made of metal which is great there is a clear plastic tray which you can see all the shavings for easy clean up.   To sharpen a pencil you have to pull out the silver part and pinch the two black tabs and insert the pencil. You don’t even have to hold the pencil while sharping it.  Then you just turn the crank. While you are sharping it you will feel when your pencil has come to a great point.
This week I teaching summer school so it is not getting the full abuse like it would during the regular school year.
One of the other summer school teachers need to sharpen pencil I introduce her to
www.classroomfriendlysupplies.com pencil sharpener.  After I showed her how to use it she sharpened about 20 pencils.  She thought it was great and their should be one in every classroom.
On their website they say it is very quite when sharpening pencil.  I notices that it is a little loud when you first start sharping it then it get pretty quite after that.  I think this pencil sharpener will work great with older grades 3-5 with a little training on it.  I feel that grades k-2 will have a hard time and a lot more training on it to use it.
There are few things that bother me about it.
1.        When teaching are I order different size of pencils a little bigger ones for the younger students. The Classroom Friendly pencil sharpener will not sharpen those pencil.  And I am not sure there is a way to fix this with their design.
2.       When you get a pencil sharpener from them it comes with a little clamp that can attach to any table.  But it comes lose.  I wish I would come with something that you can permanently attach it to a table or counter.
3.       Teaching art I sharpen any kinds of pencils all day along.  I wish they had a bigger disposal tray.
Beside those few things I think this is a great pencil sharpener and I would recommend this product to anyone.
Here is a 5% discount code  It expires on Sep 3. Anyone can simply enter this code when checking out. 155CD
Also here is a video about the Classroom Friendly Supplies Pencil Sharpener

I would like to thank the people over at www.classroomfriendlysupplies.com for sending me this awesome pencil sharpener.

Students enjoyed doing the quilling.  Their are is a few things I would do different on the quilling. So I guess you will have to wait until I do this again.

Coil, slab flowers. Update

Well I been trying to do new clay projects each year. So instead of doing fish with my 3rd graders.  I went with flowers. My students did a drawing on a 6x6 inch square and only using lines to make there flowers.  They I had my student roll coils out and recreate there drawing. We smooth it all out and combine them all together.  After they were fired we coloed them with crayons and put black paint over it and then washed it all.  I love doing that with the clay.  Over all a great project.

Update:  Yes after my student recreated their drawing with the clay coils. They do this by making it right on top of there drawing.  When they are done they smooth out.  The. I would take a rib, and make sure they were really smooth and combined.   So when you flip it over you get your design.  The only problem I had is when they are drying they curled a bit.  So I think if I would make sure the smooth size was facing they would curl so much.

My favs

Ok I am going to steal this from my friend Ted from artwithmre.  So in the next few weeks I will show you all some of my favorite things I use in my art room.

On of my favorite things is the C-Thur ruler. I love to use this rule with my students and I also use it with my personal art work.

It is 2" wide and 18" long. All the square on it make it easy to find the inch marks and even half inch marks.  This is a must have in my art room.

Collaborate art

So I saw a few examples of where high school art student work with an elementary art students art work. And use that art work as a reference.  The high school art teacher and I worked out all the details. I had my kindergarten students draw there own monster and the high school students drew, sculpted, and craved them.  It was a lot of fun. We plan on doing it again next year. So pleases stay tuned in to see what happens next.

The Gold Metal goes to.

Well I was really excited for the Winter Olympics this winter.  And I really enjoyed the simple logo they had for the different events.  So I taught my 3rd graders about complementary colors and we drew those simple logo of the Olympics.  The best part of this project is we have some 3r glasses that make their projects really pop.  You can do this with just about anything.

Plastic snowmen

So one of my parents gave me "Dexter" like plastic aprons.  So I came cross the plastic bag monsters but they really didn't show you how to put them together.  So I winged it.

So I had students cut up the plastic aprons gave them some yarn and had the tie knots around the plastic.

Then we used model magic to make the nose and eyes.  And pipe cleaner from arms.

They are pretty cute.
Need to work out some of the knots in it. I made a funny.

Let me know. Thanks.
