Color theory selfies

This is my 4th grade self portrait project this year.  We work in the color wheel.  First I showed them how to draw the face with more detail.  Then they got to pick a color group.  We used oil pastels to do the coloring.
They all look good.

Packing portraits

Ok let me start out this was one of the easy projects this year for me to teacher. But one of the most challenging projects for them. I told my 5th graders that they were going to make a selfportrait. They had to use all there prior knowledge to make it. Which they have because I do selfportrait with the other grades.
There were rules to this project. I gave them one piece of black paper to work on.
1. They could only use the packing materials that were in my box.
2. The only tools they could use are there hands. (no scissors) And they could use glue.
I will tell you what a lot of my students thought this was one of the must fun projects they did this year. It made them think about what they were doing and they also had to be great problem solvers.
I think they turned out wonderful.
Please let me know what you think.

5th Grade Max Beckmann self portrait

My 5th Graders were learning how to draw a face the right way. And that is fun all it in self I wanted them to learn about an artist also.  There are alot of artist that did self portraits, but their are many artist that we never really talk about Max Beckmann being one of them.  This was a fun one to do.  My students were using oil pastels on brown craft paper.  They have a few choices, they could draw themselves as Rockstars, Clowns, or Athlete.  But they must show all the facial figures and hair.  After we got done with the drawings we painted the whole project with black india ink, and then let it sit for a few mins.  During this class I dont have a sink which make the next step of the project a bit fun.. You need to wash off the ink. Everywhere the oil pastel is the ink resist. If you look at a Max Beckmann painting he has a lot of black outlines that is what we were trying to get.. The student really thought putting the ink on and washing it off was really cool.  The first picture is a drawing with no ink on it yet.. all the other picture have the ink on them..

5th Grade Portraits in the style of Jean Dubuffet Two Different Ways

I saw this lesson on Hands, Head'n Heart.  I never seen this painting by Jean Dubeffet before but I like it... So I wanted to try it.  I did it with my 5th grades.. We need it two different ways.

1.  We had foam head and the student painted them in the same style of Dubeffet.
2.  We used paper and cut out all the shapes to make the portrait

Both were fun and were changing for my students.  Thanks for the great lesson.

sorry the picture are a bit yellow.. not sure what happen
